Chance Theater has announced that it will be extending its production run of In The Heights through August 10 with six more performances. The show was originally scheduled to close on August 3. In The Heights is adding performances on Thursday, August 7 at 8pm, Friday, August 8 at 8pm, Saturday, August 9 at 3pm and 8pm, and Sunday, August 10 at 2pm and 7pm at Chance Theater at Bette Aitken theater arts Center.
Chance Theater's production started previews on July 3 (the same day that the show takes place) and officially opened last weekend to sold-out audiences.
Winner of four Tony Awards including Best Musical, In The Heights is a potent reminder of the importance of chasing one's dreams and finding where you belong. Featuring a Grammy Award-winning score of hip-hop, rap, jazz, pop, salsa, and merengue that serves as the backdrop for a community with dreams of succeeding in America while at the same time holding onto their culture and heritage.
In The Heights premiered on Broadway on March 9, 2008 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, directed by Kail and Andy Blankenbuehler. The production run ended on January 9, 2011 after 1,184 regular performances. During the run, the show was nominated for 11 Tony Awards (winning four for Best Orchestrations, Best Choreography, Best Score and Best Musical), was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. In addition to these accolades, In the Heights received 9 Drama Desk Award nominations (including Best Music, Best Lyrics) and an award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance, won the Lucille Lortel Award and Outer Critic's Circle Award for Best Musical, and writer Lin-Manuel Miranda received an Obie Award for Outstanding Music and Lyrics for the show.
