Center Theatre Group is now accepting submissions for the 2009 Richard E. Sherwood Award.

The Sherwood Award is an annual award of $10,000 to support and nurture early career theatre artists living in Los Angeles. The award will be presented at the Ovation Awards ceremony produced by LA Stage Alliance in the fall of 2009.

Early career artists who have resided in L.A. for at least six months, have produced at least one work in their chosen field in Los Angeles and who are innovative, adventurous and inclined to push boundaries are urged to submit an application. The artist can be a performer, playwright, director, choreographer, designer or producer; the artists are not limited by title, role or genre but must have a relationship with the art of performance.

In addition to the Sherwood Award, a professional internship with a stipend is being offered to work with producer Emilie Beck to administer the project.

The deadline for submitting an application for the Sherwood Award is April 15; the deadline for submitting an application for the internship is March 20. Further information about the Sherwood Award and the internship is available at the CTG website www.CenterTheatreGroup.org or by e-mailing Sherwood@CenterTheatreGroup.org.

Established in the memory of Richard E. Sherwood, a lawyer, patron of the arts, president of LACMA and member of the Center Theatre Group board from 1980 until his death in 1993 (in that time period also serving as both CTG board president and chairman), the award is an endowed fund at CTG by the Sherwood family and honors Sherwood's passionate commitment to theatre.

The most recent Sherwood Award recipients have been Ameenah Kaplan, whose work as a choreographer and director combines spectacle, athleticism and aerial movement with storytelling; Ian Garrett, who creates socially and ecologically responsible production systems for theatres; and Lars Jan, whose work focuses on integrating new technology with physical performance.
