Harry Hay organized America's first gay-rights group, the Mattachine Society, from his apartment in 1948 Silver Lake. This July, Celebration Theatre will present Hay Days, an unseen picture of gay life before Stonewall and Harvey Milk.

To create an accurate moment of forgotten history, the creative team is working with the cooperation of the Hay Estate, his biographers and heirs to his legacy.

Thomas James O'Leary, who starred in Celebration's acclaimed production of Take Me Out, takes on the title role of Hay in this workshop production.

Hay Days received a development scholarship from Primary Stages in New York and presented a staged reading and Harry Hay Symposium at the LGBT Center in the West Village.

The workshop production at Celebration Theatre presents the next stage of development for the script. A post-show dialogue between the audience, creative team and Hay Estate is a critical component of each performance.

Hay Days is part of CT Tuesdays, a forum where new works are developed. Scripts have already had a staged reading and have been identified to move forward in their development process. This is a minimalist production, using a set and lighting plot, with the focus remaining on the script and a short, but intense, rehearsal process by the director and actors.

Hay Days. Written by Rob Rosiello. Created by Rob Rosiello and Jim Halloran. Directed by Efrain Schunior. Starring Thomas James O'Leary.

Performances - Tuesdays - July 12, 19 and 26 at 8 p.m.
