Casting has been announced for the Los Angeles premiere of Cy Coleman and Ira Gasman's gritty musical The Life.
Joe Greene will direct the pre-Disney Times Square-set musical that will begin performances Dec. 3 at Hollywood's Stella Adler Theatre. Opening night will be Dec. 6, and performances will continue through Dec. 21.
Featuring a score by late Tony winner Cy Coleman, lyrics by Ira Gasman and a book by David Newman, The Life centers on a group of prostitutes and pimps hustling to survive in New York City in 1980.
The cast features Ethan Le Phong (Jojo), David St. Louis (Memphis), Cheryl Murphy-Johnson (Sonja), Ddé Dionne Gipson (Queenie), Robert G. (Fleetwood), Stephanie Girard (Mary) and Chris Cobb Olsen(Lou).
Completing the company are Willam Belli, Joshua Campbell, Robin Ray Eller, Mara Hall, Rusty Hamrick, DT Matias, Taryn Reneau, Cindy Sciacca-Hooker, Tony Melson, LaQuette Milner and Angel Laketa Moore.
The production is designed by Eric Snodgrass (technical director) and Dan Selon (costume designer). The Life will have choreography by Paul Romero, Jr.
The Life opened on Broadway April 26, 1997, at the Barrymore Theatre. The production earned 12 Tony nominations, including Best Musical. Cast members Chuck Cooper and Lillias White received Tonys for their work.
