CSULB Theatre Arts Department's California Repertory Company is thrilled to present Far Away, written by Caryl Churchill and directed by Trevor Biship. Playing Friday, November 12th through December 5th, Far Away is a timely and thought-provoking work set in a government-controlled dystopia, following a young woman as she becomes an adult and struggles to understand the world around her.
Director Trevor Biship, who last season directed The Colored Museum at CSULB, will be working with a cast of both graduate and undergraduate theatre students to present this piece, written by industry-renowned playwright Caryl Churchill. Considered to be one of theatre's most respected and influential writers, Churchill has won numerous awards including Obie Awards for her plays Cloud Nine, Top Girls, and Serious Money. Biship has expressed excitement in bringing one of Churchill's lesser-known works to the stage, calling her "a playwright who thinks provocatively about our world."
Far Away marks the return of California Repertory Company to the University Theatre, a newly technologically-renovated performance space on the CSULB campus. With 350 seats, the University Theatre is now the largest venue available to the Theatre Arts Department, and Biship is looking forward to showcasing it through his production. He refers to the theatre, which has received new lighting, rigging, and other updates, as "epic enough to surprise an audience," and promises that Far Away will be "beautifully designed and visually stunning."
Biship has directed the works of diverse contemporary playwrights from Suzan-Lori Parks to Paula Vogel. This is Biship's tenth production with CSULB. His most recent directorial work includes the Premieres of Samuel D. Hunter's A Bright New Boise, Sarah Ruhl's Passion Play, and Jerry Springer: The Opera(winner of Ovation Award for Best Musical - Intimate Theatre). World and regional premieres include Up, Film, Just Say No, Bash: Latterday Plays and Psalms of a Questionable Nature, as well as revivals of Eurydice and the award-nominated Cal Rep production of The Kentucky Cycle. He has worked with numerous Los Angeles theatres, including South Coast Repertory, Circle X Theatre, Theatre of NOTE, Moveable Piece, Cornerstone Theatre Company and the Pasadena Playhouse. Trevor's productions have received nominations from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards, Ovation Awards, Los Angeles Drama Critics' Circle Awards, and Los Angeles Weekly Theatre Awards. He has also received a Backstage Garland Award for Best Direction. Trevor teaches directing at CSULB and received his M.F.A. in Directing from the University of California, Irvine.
