The Beverly Hills Bar Association (BHBA), in association with the Beverly Hills Bar Foundation and the Law Guild of Beverly Hills, hosts the 59th Annual Supreme Court Luncheon honoring the California Supreme Court on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, 11:30 a.m., at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye is attending and is providing remarks on the current state of the Judiciary. This is her third appearance at the BHBA's perennial luncheon since becoming Chief Justice in 2011. Unlike previous years, the Supreme Court Associate Justices will not be in attendance. Due to fiscal constraints caused by the state's budget cuts, this year the Court is not holding its usual June oral argument session in Los Angeles, around which the BHBA Supreme Court Luncheon has always been slated, but, instead, will remain in San Francisco, where the court normally convenes.

Adam Winkler, professor of Constitutional Law at UCLA and author of "Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right To Bear Arms in America," is the guest speaker. A specialist in constitutional law, his work has been cited in landmark Supreme Court cases, including opinions dealing with the Second Amendment and the rights of corporate political speech.

"We are particularly pleased to have California's Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye as our honored guest this year, especially in light of the state's fiscal constraints," said BHBA President John Rubiner. "While we will miss having the opportunity to thank the Associate Justices of the Supreme Court in person for their commitment and service to the citizens of our state, this is an invaluable opportunity for the legal community to hear the Chief Justice's remarks on the current state of the Judiciary."

More than 50 California judicial officers and other dignitaries are slated to attend the Beverly Hills Bar Association's annual Supreme Court Luncheon, a tradition that began in 1954, providing Southern California lawyers and jurists an opportunity to get together outside of the courtroom.

In addition to Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye, the other members of the California Supreme Court include Associate Justices Joyce L. Kennard, Marvin R. Baxter, Kathryn Mickle Werdegar, Ming W. Chin, Carol A. Corrigan and Goodwin H. Liu.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Beverly Hills Bar Foundation scholarship program, which provides scholarships to economically disadvantaged, academically qualified law students. This year, scholarships are being presented to seven local law school students: Andrea Yamsuan of Loyola Law School; Sarah Yance of Pepperdine University School of Law; DeAndre Aubry from Southwestern University School of Law; Amalia Beckner, Scott Sia and Theresa Zhen of UCLA School of Law; and Jennifer Cohen from USC Gould School of Law.

In addition, the BHBA recognizes Jason Pang from the UCLA School of Law, who won the BHBA's 4th Annual "Rule of Law Essay Writing Competition" for his paper titled "Presidential Non Enforcement and the Rule of Law."

Scholarship Donors ($6,000) are Girardi | Keese; Greines, Martin, Stein & Richland LLP; Law Offices of Lisa L. Maki; Shernoff Bidart Echeverria Bentley LLP; and the USC Gould School of Law-Beverly Hills Bar Association Institute on Entertainment Law and Business.
