Bonhams & Butterfields' Entertainment Memorabilia auction on June 28, 2009 will include a wide range of collectible items from Hollywood's golden past including Rudolph Valentino's jacket and vest worn in the 1924 production of Monsieur Beaucaire (est. $4,000-6,000). The costume is comprised of two 18th Century-style period pieces including an ornate cotton and silk jacket adorned with gold-colored floral brocade and a corresponding crème-colored silk vest.
"Rudolph Valentino's reputation as a heartthrob has stood the test of time. To this day, he continues to be one of the most popular and recognized stars of the silent film era. Due to his captivating on-screen persona and charm, items related to Valentino are highly coveted by collectors. " said Margaret Barrett, Director of Entertainment Memorabilia.
The jacket and vest were both donated to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) by Valentino's second wife, Natacha Rambova, and recently consigned to Bonhams & Butterfields for the June auction.
Additional highlights for this auction, including vintage animation cells and one-of-a-kind Rock-n-Roll pieces will be announced in late April. Images and film stills are available upon request. The illustrated auction catalog will be online at www.bonhams.com/us in the weeks preceding the sale and Los Angeles previews.
