The national touring production of Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, will begin performances at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles beginning with one preview on March 11 at 8 p.m. and is set to run through April 6. Although running as part of the Mark Taper Forum's season, due to ongoing renovation, Sweeney Todd will play at the adjacent Ahmanson.
Directed and designed by John Doyle, the national touring company stars Judy Kaye (Mrs. Lovett) and David Hess (Sweeney Todd). They will be joined by Diana DiMarzio, Benjamin Eakeley, Benjamin Magnuson, Steve McIntyre, Lauren Molina and Elisa Winter, all of whom appeared in the Broadway production. Also in the cast are Edmund Bagnell, Keith Buterbaugh, Katrina Yaukey, Edwin Cahill, David Garry and Megan Loomis.
Winner of the Drama League, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Revival of a Musical in 2006, Sweeney Todd is based on the 19th century legend of a London barber driven to a life of crime after a malevolent judge takes his wife and child from him. Sweeney's plan for revenge includes a cutthroat partnership with Mrs. Lovett - an enterprising businesswoman - who is soon producing the tastiest meat pies in London.
