Bubble art, science, magic and fun were alive onstage the weekend of March 2-3 at the Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica when Louis Pearl, "The Amazing Bubble Man," performed unbelievable acts of wonder for kids of all ages.

At the age of 19, Pearl spent his late nights perfecting his bubble-making hobby which he turned into a profitable toy business after leaving college. In his stage act, Pearl utilized many devices of his own invention and has thrilled audiences over 30 years with his performances before more than one million people, including royalty and celebrities in hundreds of cities across the U.S. and around the world. He is a favorite at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where he's enjoyed six years of sold-out shows.

Pearl started his show asking everyone, "Who wants to float around in a magic bubble?" and I freely admit to raising my hand along with most of the other audience members. In addition to exploring the impressive dynamics of bubbles, his show combined comedy and artistry, with plenty of audience participation, especially from the many enthusiastic kids willing to run up onstage and be part of his act.

Bubble tricks performed included square bubbles, bubbles inside bubbles, fog-filled bubbles, giant bubbles, bubble volcanoes, tornadoes and trampolines, to kids inside bubbles, all of which generated shrieks of laughter and gasps of amazement from audience members of all ages.

Pearl also demonstrated that you can make bubbles using almost any object, even a $5 bill or an empty water bottle provided by audience members. An expert with improv, Pearl's spunky sense of humor was especially evident when a woman in the front row was asked what made him so special. But watch out - anyone caught yawning during the show gets squirted in the face by a water gun, which Pearl finally turned on himself to the squeals of the audience.
