The Beat Goes On!/a Jackie Goldberg and Rockin' with the Ages Production/written, directed & choreographed by Cate Caplin/Theatre of Arts Arena Stage, Hollywood/through November 25
The fourth show from Jackie Goldberg and Rockin' with the Ages The Beat Goes On! is by far their BEST, most slick and vibrant and totally indicative of Goldberg's great philosophy for all seniors to "Get Up, Get Out and Get a Life!" It really MOVES! But you don't have to be a senior to enjoy the show. There's something for everyone from hip hop to rock and roll to "Young at Heart".
What director Cate Caplin has achieved with a group of 15 entertainers (actually 24 in the ensemble, with actors alternating roles at each performance) is amazing! Seniors over 60 do not dance quite as well as they did when they were younger - maybe only the Palm Springs Follies have proved that statement wrong...up 'til now! They sing, they dance, they cavort around the stage with such alacrity that it is impossible to consider age a deterrent. It's mind over matter. "If you don't mind, it just doesn't matter." There is sensational work from standouts Derrel Maury, who does an incredible Al Jolson medley, Joe Giamalva, who taps his behind off and does some beautiful dancing with beautiful Susie McIver Ewing, funny stuff from funnyman Robert Towers, some great singing from Anna Pagan, Barbara Haber and Dom Morra, and an adorable "Everything Old Is New Again" from tapper Michelle Bernath. Kudos as well to straight man Larry Lederman, Bobbi Stamm, Richard Fox, and Kit Smythe, whose sexy moves just sizzle. Cast also includes: Marcia Rodd, Phyllis Lovit, Deborah Bartlett, William Bartlett, Michelle Gillette, Renee Gorsey, Vernon McGhee, Ruben Rabasa, Tamara Reed, Lani Ridley Pedrini, Carol Woodbury and Carmelita Pittman.
There are many terrific upbeat standards included...and three brand new songs created for this show: "Get Up, Get Out and Get a Life" and "Rockin with the Ages", both written by Rick Soloman and "Evil Man" by Carmelita Pittman. David O is the fab musical director.
Keith Mitchell has designed a neat Hollywoodesque performance set and Ann Closs-Farley has outdone herself with the gorgeous costumes! Oh, did I mention there are surprise numbers...and a special guest star as a big-time Hollywood producer/casting director? Watch out! It's a lot of fun coming your way, so don't miss out, through November 25.
