Feature: Me + You Productions Presents SPRING AWAKENING at The Lounge Theater: Aug 24 - Sept 9th Image

Me + You Productions is gearing up for their Los Angeles production of the Tony-Award winning musical Spring Awakening. The show will begin its three-week run at The Lounge Theatre in West Hollywood, California, opening on August 24th and closing September 9th.

100% of ticket proceeds from this production will benefit Everytown for Gun Safety, an American nonprofit organization whose aim is to reduce gun deaths in the wake of increased mass shootings.

With music by Duncan Sheik and book/lyrics by Steven Sater, Spring Awakening is a musical adaptation of the 1891 play, "Spring's Awakening" by Frank Wedekind. Described as "a haunting and electrifying rock n' roll musical" with "shimmering sensuality," Spring Awakening tells the story of adolescents in 1890s Germany, experiencing the confusion of teenage sexual awakening in the midst of an ultra-conservative, repressive society.

The original 2006 Broadway production was nominated for 11 Tony-Awards, winning 8 including Best Musical. Spring Awakening also had a notable Broadway revival in 2015, directed by Michael Arden, produced by DeafWest.

Me + You Productions' Founder and Spring Awakening Producer, Asha Noel Iyer, promises a bold, stunning new take on the show: "I decided to create this production because I couldn't get over the parallels between this story, and society today. Spring Awakening is such a timeless and important story, and though it's set in 1890's Germany, it evokes all of these modern issues we still face in 2018. Both worlds beg us to ask the question, what happens when a society does not protect its youth? I am thrilled to draw this question into our production and reflect this story through the lens of our current socio-political atmosphere."

Director Travis Kendrick, is no stranger to Spring Awakening, having just directed the musical at Mill Mountain Theatre this past July. "This story is ultimately one about a society and a system that fails the people that matter most - its children. I liken it to Romeo and Juliet, where you have this young couple, these 'star-crossed lovers,' whose preventable undoing really comes about because of the failures of the people above them. That's something we're seeing so much of now, especially with the increase in school shootings. This production has a lot of really exciting and innovative conceptual design elements, and I'm excited to tell this story while still drawing in these modern connections."

Me + You Productions' Spring Awakening features Andrew Gleckler as Melchior, Asha Noel Iyer as Wendla, Thomas Adoue Polk as Moritz, Emma Lou DeLaney as Ilse, Anthony Cloyd as Hanschen, Michael Waller as Ernst, Timothy Reese as Georg, Laila Erica Drew as Martha, L.E. Woods as Otto, Juj Seeley as Thea, Abbey Kate as Anna, Kris Robinson as the Adult Woman, and Jack Stuart as the Adult Man.

The creative team is led by Direction/Choreography by Travis Kendrick, Music Direction by Myrona DeLaney, Set Design by David Goldstein, Lighting Design by Martha Carter, Costume Design by Sera Borgeau, Sound Design by Franklin Kramer, Associate Choreography by Emma Lou Delaney, and Assistant Lighting Design by Avery Reagan.
