Black Women: State Of the Union returns to the Company of Angels' black box performance space in the historic Alexandria Hotel in downtown Los Angeles due to overwhelming audience response from last year's run at the Skylight Theater. BWSOTU-Taking Flight re-opens February 15th and runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 3pm through February 24, 2013.
"We birthed BWSOTU on this stage and we return here again to pay homage to where it came from. This is also what Black History Month is about, and we are excited to be celebrating the month in this way," exclaimed BWSOTU co-producer, Lony'e Perrine.
This production of BWSOTU-Taking Flight features: Sigrid Gilmer's "Simulacra," which pokes fun at the representations of black women in recent feature films; Lisa B. Thompson's "I Don't Want to Be," about the ties of survival that strengthen the mothers of innocent crime victims; Kellie Dantzler's "Evolutionary" takes a look at a prominent Civil Rights activist mother giving deathbed advice on the need for humor; Tanya Alexander-Henderson's "Ritual" is a poetic inspirational meditation; Penelope Lowder's "The Follicle Prison War," a hilarious parody about notions of beauty and hair weaves set in the future, and "15 Minutes" a wry comedy about two people on a speed date. The cast includes Lee Sherman, Tamika Simpkins, Kila Kitu, Lony'e Perrine, Michelle Flowers, Austen Jaye, and Hari Williams, and the co-directors are Nataki Garrett, Ayana Cahrr, and Kila Kitu.
The Company of Angels Theater is located in the Alexandria Hotel at 501 South Spring Street (3rd Floor), Los Angeles, CA 90013. Tickets are $20 ($15 Senior/Student discount).
