"Our 2015 show proved that while Los Angeles is a TV and Film town, it secretly loves Musical Theatre, and we want to share the art form with LA as we have come to know it, through our collective experiences on Broadway," said producer and singer Victor Hawks. "So many gifted Broadway artists are in LA working in TV and film. We wanted to make the highest caliber of Broadway performers accessible to people in LA, and the line at our first show proved that people are starving for it!"
BROADWAY AT THE W was derived from producer/actress Mekia Cox's (Secrets & Lies) desire to bring the magic of the stage out to the west coast. "Majoring in Musical Theater in college and then being a part of multiple national Broadway tours, there's a part of my soul that always longs for the stage," explains Cox.
"Coming from the Broadway hub of New York City we wanted to bring more musical theatre to LA," said Mike Evariste and Tiffany Evariste, who's list of Broadway credits include 10 Broadway shows. "And we wanted to present it in a different way. We knew hosting it within the W Hotel would beautifully combine the art form with a social setting. An intimate and fun way to have that Broadway experience in LA."
The show features four stages, dance floor, and live musicians truly enveloping the audience in Broadway song and dance. Tickets start at $20 with advance purchase for standing room, and increase up to $500 VIP sections.
"We take in so much of our content on the internet, and it is impersonal and detached in a lot of ways, I think it is important to keep live performance alive because it forces us to deal with our humanity on an intimate and personal level," said Daniel J Watts of Broadway's record-breaking success, "Hamilton."
"I think LA needs BROADWAY AT THE W, and through what I call 'Watts Words' my mission is to help audiences focus on their social similarities as opposed to their differences, and in the unique way Broadway at the W bridges this message with music, it allows me to bring this message to LA in an innovative and important way," continued Watts.
"Having a background in dance I've come to know some amazing choreographers" says Cox " And I recognize that we tend to praise the dancers for their execution, which is great, however we rarely get to appreciate the choreographers, and I love that our show does that. It brings all the pieces together: the music, the talent, the performance and we celebrate it all."
New to the 2016 show is the Choreographers Showcase. The concept was developed by new Producer Vivian Nixon of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy in order to put a spotlight on the vibrant dance community in LA. These young and hungry choreographers are primed for their Broadway choreography debuts. Jessica Lea Patty, Lyric Cruz, William Harris, Mychal McChulle and Brandon O'Neil have performed on the Broadway stage in shows including "A Chorus Line" and "A Boy fro, Oz;" with artists including Beyoncé and Missy Elliot; and choreographed dances for "So You Think You Can Dance" and "American Idol." These bright, diverse talents will bring their chops to BROADWAY AT THE W's thrilling and emotional dance numbers.
BROADWAY AT THE W is currently being developed in New York for the W Times Square. Its sister show, Broadway Unplugged, is a series of intimate concerts at The Living Room, W Hollywood.
