ARTISTS RISE UP LOS ANGELES presents an afternoon of powerful Spoken Word and Storytelling, AMERICAN SPRING, benefiting the East Los Angeles Women's Shelter. It is presented in association with WE THE PEOPLE (Sacred Fools Theater Company).
ABOUT "ARTISTS RISE UP LOS ANGELES"
ARTISTS RISE UP LOS ANGELES, the brainchild of director and executive producer Sue Hamilton, (in collaboration with ARTISTS RISE UP NEW YORK and its leader, Jessica Litwak), was born as a result of the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election: "ARULA speaks to the need to create positive, social and revolutionary change by being who we are and doing what we DO," shares Sue Hamilton.
ARULA boasts over one hundred and fifty members and continues to grow each day. It is made up of diverse members of the creative community, representing actors, directors, writers, filmmakers, singers and dancers, spoken word artists, photographers and others, all of whom have come together to RISE UP.
WE WILL NOT BE SILENT. WE WILL USE OUR UNIQUE ARTISTIC VOICES TO BRING SOCIAL JUSTICE AND POSITIVE CHANGE TO THE WORLD.
Comments ARULA executive producer, Sue Hamilton, "Art has the power to expose us to perspectives we might never have previously considered, and in the current political climate, many feel helpless and even hopeless. We hope that through our art we can encourage not only understanding, but activism. ARULA aims to inspire all who wish to be proactively involved the ability to RISE UP, get involved in social change, and unite our community through creativity."
ABOUT "WE THE PEOPLE"
We The People Theatre Action is a bi-monthly, curated series of new works theatrically exploring, sometimes loudly, sometimes quietly, and everything in between, the concerns facing our country and world today. This action is an opportunity for artists and audience to come together to Resist, Persist, and Express it -- to find hope and unity. 100% of the proceeds for every show go to support a related non-profit in need. Previous recipients include Tanenbaum, Carecen-LA, Peace Over Violence, and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. We The People was created and is produced by Kimberly Atkinson and Amir Levi for Sacred Fools Theater Company.
Sacred Fools Theater Company, the resident theater company of The Broadwater, 1078 Lillian Way (Santa Monica Blvd. and Lillian Way) on Theater Row, is a non-profit, ensemble-run theater company founded in 1997, committed to the development of new plays and projects that challenge traditional expectations of the theatrical experience.

Using our unique and diverse artistic voices, ARULA is presenting an afternoon of Spoken Word and Storytelling, AMERICAN SPRING, benefiting the East Los Angeles Women's Shelter.
ARTISTS RISE UP ACROSS THE NATION
In addition to ARULA, groups have also formed in New York (ARUNY) and around the nation, all participating in a national dialogue to use theatre and art to process the diverse range of emotions after the 2016 U.S. election.
ARULA's inaugural production, E PLURIBUS UNUM: OUT OF MANY, ONE was a collection of short plays and scenes, music, dance (choreographed by Broadway's "Hamilton" co-choreographer Karla Puno Garcia), spoken word, multi-media presentations, as well as art and photography installations. It played to a sold-out crowd on January 31, 2017 at the El Portal Theatre, and was featured on the cover of the LA Times Calendar section, spawning nationwide interest and activation. All proceeds were donated to ACLU, HRC, CAIR, NRDC, and NARAL Pro-Choice. TRANSPARENCY, TAXES & TWEETS, featuring the liberal redneck Trae Crowder played to a sold-out audience on April 17, 2017 at the Atwater Village Theatre and donated all its proceeds to the Southern Poverty Law Center. ARULA SHORT FILM FESTIVAL, featuring Daniela Arguella's award-winning "2500 KM" played to a sold-out crowd at the Downtown Independent on November 8, 2017, and donated all its proceeds to Planned Parenthood.
