Academy Presents New Restoration of Wild River 10/14

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a new Academy Film Archive restoration of "Wild River" on Thursday, October 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, as part of the multi-venue film series "A 20th Anniversary Tribute to The Film Foundation," organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Film Department. Following the screening, Academy Film Archive Director Michael Pogorzelski will lead an onstage discussion featuring Schawn Belston, senior vice president of library and technical services at Fox Filmed Entertainment; Oscar®-winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler, who was an additional photographer on the film; and actor Bruce Dern, who made his first film appearance in this movie.

Directed and produced by Elia Kazan, "Wild River" (1960) is an intense drama set against the backdrop of the Great Depression. Montgomery Clift plays a field agent for the Tennessee Valley Authority who must convince an elderly woman (Jo Van Fleet) to give up her property for a project, while he becomes romantically involved with her widowed granddaughter (Lee Remick).

The Film Foundation, founded in 1990 by Martin Scorsese, has become an inspirational force in film restoration and preservation. By partnering with the world's leading film archives, The Film Foundation has helped save more than 545 short and feature-length films to date. This growing legacy is being honored in "A 20th Anniversary Tribute to The Film Foundation," presenting a total of 13 films that have been restored by the Academy Film Archive, the UCLA Film & Television Archive, the British Film Institute, the Cineteca di Bologna, Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia/ Cineteca Nazionale, George Eastman House, the Library of Congress and the Museum of Modern Art, all with support from The Film Foundation and in collaboration with motion picture studios.

In addition to "Wild River," two other films restored by the Academy Film Archive will be presented at LACMA as part of the series: "Leave Her to Heaven" (1945) and "Pather Panchali" (1955).

Tickets for "Wild River" are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID, and may be purchased starting October 1 online at www.oscars.org, in person at the Academy box office or by mail.
