Company Creation Festival, Son of Semele's popular showcase for new works developed by unconventional methodologies, returns to the Son of Semele Theater January 18 to February 12, 2017. Curated by Son of Semele, the annual festival promotes boundary-pushing LA theater artists by providing them with free performance space and marketing support.

Awakenings and Pie Fights, Remembrance and Wonderment

The 2017 festival includes new works by established local companies Four Clowns and Leonix Movement Theatre, as well as two new ensembles, The Attic Collective and The Visceral City Project. The latter is the brainchild of Son of Semele Ensemble member Ashley Steed.

"We're so proud to be supporting the development of four such exciting and wildly different pieces," says festival producer Kate Motzenbacker. "This year's festival really showcases the breadth of work being devised in Los Angeles."

BEFORE ALL ELSE
Leonix Movement Theatre (January 28 & 29, February 8, 9 & 10)

Ibsen's A Doll's House is the jumping-off point for this highly physical imagining of Nora's inner journey of self-discovery as she decides to walk away from everything she's ever known.
devised by the company / directed by Erin Schlabach

JACKSON-LAFITTE: A VAUDEVILLE
Four Clowns (January 21 & 22, February 1, 2 & 3)

Through song, dance and pie fights, discover the unlikely alliance between General Andrew Jackson and gentleman pirate Jean Lafitte that helped sink the British at the Battle of New Orleans.
written by Mike Funt & Jennifer Carroll / directed by Ron West

WHAT HAPPENED TO WHERE I'VE BEEN
The Attic Collective (January 18, 19 & 20, February 4 & 5)

How do we tell our stories? This experimental seriocomedy considers the interplay of memory, nostalgia and technology - from home movies to Instagram - in the way we archive our histories.
devised by the company / directed by Rosie Glen-Lambert

WONDER CITY
The Visceral City Project (January 25, 26 & 27, February 11 & 12)

By layering and interweaving stories of day-to-day Los Angeles, this theatrical collage builds a dynamic, living portrait of our truly wondrous city.
devised by the company / directed by Ashley Steed
