About Sushi Savant

Sushi Savant — We sing about food and by extension, consumer culture. For those looking to brave heavier fare, we also perform songs about dystopian futures, the challenges of aging, unrequited love, sword-wielding geisha, and then to lighten things up, ponies and rainbows. We have a cumulative 240 years of musical experience, and thus, to our mind, have earned the self-proclaimed nickname Philosopher Kings of Rock 'n' Roll.

"It was over pasta with a meaty red sauce" recalls Joe Gioglio. "Yeah" adds John Tabacco "and Jim showed up to the diner with flow charts". "I wanted to maximize our leverage" explains Jim Pastor. The three Long Island songwriters emerged from their 2016 meeting with a collective mission: to get their set of diverse and original tunes heard. A bar gig and a WUSB Benefest later, the trio connected with rhythm master Gary Settoducato, whose past collaborations include The EVT Band, Hank Stone Band, and He-Bird, She-Bird. "Gary brings a vast library of righteous grooves to the mix" boasts Jim. Shaking his head, Gary adds "There's no laying back with these guys - so many time signature and tempo changes". The foursome played their eclectic blend at original music-friendly venues such as KJ Farrells and 89 North, eventually shuffling the roster a bit to invite Long Island music community stalwart Mike Christian, founding member of the popular genre-defying Grand Folk Railroad, to play bass. "Sushi Savant is my new favorite band" proclaims Mike. Their debut as a quintet was this past spring at The BACCA Arts Center in Lindenhurst.
