One of the premier companies performing today, Dance Theater of Harlem comes to Staller Center’s Main Stage to captivate the hearts and minds of audiences with their illustrious company of performers.
Established in 1970 by Arthur Mitchell, Dance Theatre of Harlem was formed in conjunction with the Civil Rights Movement. The philosophy of the organization was simple- provide classical dance to everyone, regardless of societal and financial barriers. Now, over 50 years later Dance Theater of Harlem has established itself as one of the premier companies performing today. Its signature company of 18, multi-ethnic dancers performs a forward-thinking repertoire of traditional works and contemporary pieces.
Bringing this repertoire to the Staller Center, this robust company of performers will bring to life traditional and neo-classical work by George Balanchine and resident choreographer Robert Garland. These simultaneously innovative and ceremonial performances show how there is no company like Dance Theater of Harlem performing today.
With a celebrated and storied history, Dance Theater of Harlem has toured the world, engaged communities, and introduced young minds to the power of dance. In all of their growth, this boundary-breaking, dynamic organization has stayed true to Arthur Mitchell’s core belief- ballet belongs to everyone
