Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (PTPA) is proud to present the new voice of American Soul, Brian Owens, in "What's Going On: The Marvin Gaye Experience," on Friday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. The performance will also serve a VIP Member Appreciation Night for Patchogue Theatre VIP Members, who can attend the show for free and are invited to a cocktail reception following Owens' performance.
"What's Going On: The Marvin Gaye Experience" invites the audience to partake in a show combining the beloved and lesser-known hits of the legendary Marvin Gaye to deliver an event that simultaneously honors the past and attends to the present and future.
Owens performs selections that span Gaye's music-making career. Early solo hits like "Can I Get a Witness" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" share space with "You're All I Need to Get By" and other classic duets. And any Marvin Gaye song list would be incomplete without perennial (and challenging) crowd-pleasers like "Let's Get It On" or "Got To Give It Up."
At its heart, Brian Owens' 'Marvin Gaye Experience' is about "preservation; it's a matter of upholding the tradition of true soul music that is so desperately needed in our culture today."
The show prominently features a suite of pieces from Gaye's "What's Going On" album, which Owens counts as "one of the most socially important artistic works in the history of American music." In light of events in and around Ferguson, Missouri where he resides, Brian Owens says the show also speaks to a "heightened sense of urgency [today] and the prophetic beauty" of Gaye's 1971 work.
Patchogue Theatre is also proud to announce 14 dynamic performances this fall, which includes the return of country music legend Clint Black to Patchogue Theatre on Sept. 23 where he performed a sold out show in 2016. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album on Oct. 27, and MuseFest, on Sept. 29, featuring Miles to Dayton, Kerry Kearney and Jack Licitra.
Long Island native, Lee Rocker of The Stray Cats, is all about that bass on Oct. 14 when makes his Patchogue Theatre debut.
