The John W. Engeman Theater at Northport (Kevin J. O'Neill, Managing Director and Richard T. Dolce, Producing Artistic Director) announces its 2016-2017 Youth Theater Season, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union.
The season starts with RAPUNZEL, with a book by "Friends" creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman, and music by Michael Skloff. Forced to live alone in a tower with nothing but her hair and her witch (literally) of a "mother", Rapunzel's sixteenth birthday has come - meaning she'll be able to see the outside world for the first time, just as her "mother" promised. Scared to let her go, though, the witch reneges. Lucky for Rapunzel a young prince, named Brian, happens across her tower and calls out her as he's seen the witch do: "Rapunzel! Rapunzel! Let down your hair!" Before the Prince and Rapunzel have their inevitable "happily ever after," though, they're going to have to face the wrath of the witch and few other hilarious obstacles. August 6, 2016 - September 11, 2016.
Next will be the beloved musical THE WIZARD OF OZ, based on the classic story by L. Frank Baum. Dorothy Gale, bored with her life on a Kansas farm, is swept away to a magical land by a tornado and sets off on a quest to see the Wizard who can help her return home. On her way she meets a Scarecrow who needs a brain, a Tin Man who wants a heart and a Cowardly Lion who desperately needs courage. They all hope the Wizard of Oz will help them, before the Wicked Witch of the West catches up with them. October 1, 2016 - November 6, 2016.
Celebrate the holiday season with the return of FROSTY! Join Jenny and Frosty on their chilly adventures as they try to save the town of Chillsville from the mean old Ethel Pierpot and her evil machine that will melt all the snow. Jenny calls on her Mom, the mayor, and all of you to help her save her home, get Frosty to the North Pole, and make this holiday season a Winter Wonderland for one and all! November 26, 2016 - December 31, 2016.
The season continues in the New Year with THE SNOW QUEEN, based on the classic Hans Christian Anderson story of friendship, love and coming of age. Join Gerda as she sets out to save the boy next door - her best friend Kai - from the icy palace of the Snow Queen. Along the way Gerda encounters robbers, witches, royalty and a talking crow as her adventures take her closer to saving her friend. January 28 - March 5, 2016.
We end our season with MADAGASCAR - A MUSICAL ADVENTURE! Join Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, Gloria the hip hip Hippo and, of course, those hilarious, plotting penguins as they bound onto your stage in the musical adventure of a lifetime. Based on the smash hit DreamWorks animated motion picture, the outlandish characters, adventure and upbeat score of MADAGASCAR will leave audiences with no choice but to "Move It, Move It!" March 25 - April 30, 2016.
