On Thursday, February 16, Kevin J. O'Neill, owner of the John W. Engeman Theater at Northport, presented a check for $35,000 to Mr. Robert Banzer, Superintendent of the Northport-East Northort School District, and the Board of Education. The $35,000 check included an $8,000 donation from the educational foundation, FRIENNDS of Northport.
The check presentation was the result of the January 23rd and 24th performances of Patti LuPone's concert Don't Monkey with Broadway at the John W. Engeman Theater, benefitting the Performing Arts Department at Ms. LuPone's alma mater, Northport High School.
At the concert on Tuesday, January 24th, Dr. Izzet Mergen, Director of Fine and Performing Arts for Northport High School, announced that these funds will be used to purchase instruments and allow students with limited financial means to participate in extracurricular music and arts programming.
In its 10 years of operation, the Engeman has raised funds for a wide variety of causes, including the American Red Cross and the Hurricane Sandy Relief effort, the First Presbyterian Church of Northport, the Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry of Northport and the Huntington Light House Preservation Society. With the funds raised for the Northport High School Performing Arts Department, the Engeman's lifetime charitable giving has now surpassed $1.1 million.
