Bay Street Theatre's Picture Show expands this Spring with a new series for lovers of both music and film! THE LEGENDS SERIES, sponsored in part by Long Island Radio Broadcasting WEHM 92.9/96.9, will feature four evenings of incredibly rare film footage of live performances by some of the greatest musical icons of all time.
THE LEGENDS SERIES, compiled and hosted by filmmaker JOE LAURO, will bring to the big screen amazing musical performance video clips culled from one of the world's largest archives of music on film, the Historic Films Archive. Historic Films is dedicated to the re-discovery and preservation of all forms of American entertainment as it exists on film and video tape.
THE LEGENDS SERIES will kick-off on Saturday, May 22nd at 8pm with a "Legends of Rock" evening. Audiences will see and hear rock legends such as
Janis Joplin, THE BEATLES,
James Brown, the ROLLING STONES, LED ZEPPELIN, GRATEFUL DEAD, THE RAMONES,
Chuck Berry, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, JACKSON FIVE, SLY & THE FAMILY STONE and many others in footage rarely seen before! Following the film is a special live performance by local band, THE WHO DAT LOUNGERS.
The series continues on Monday, June 7th with the "Legends of Jazz and Blues". Filmed performances by
Billie Holiday,
Louis Armstrong,
Benny Goodman, HOWLING WOLF, MUDDY WATERS,
Ella Fitzgerald, JIMMY REED,
Bessie Smith, LESTER YOUNG, NAT KING COLE and other Jazz and Blues legends will be featured.
Monday, June 14th at 8pm is "The Fabulous Divas" evening featuring rare and exciting footage of
Aretha Franklin,
Etta James, BARBRA STRIESAND,
Eartha Kitt,
Janis Joplin, MADONNA,
Julie Andrews,
Ethel Merman,
Peggy Lee,
The Supremes and many more surprises.
THE LEGENDS SERIES will conclude on Monday, June 21st at 8pm with "The Pioneers of Rock". Footage of early heroes of rock before ‘rock' even existed will be shown including -
Elvis Presley, FATS DOMINO,
Little Richard,
Bo Diddley,
Louis Prima,
Louis Jordan,
Ruth Brown and many others.
Historic Films has provided film clips to everyone from THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME MUSEUM and
Martin Scorsese (his BLUES and
Bob Dylan projects) to AMERICAN IDOL and THE GRAMMY AWARDS.
