Bay Street Theatre is pleased to announce a new Community Series titled "With My Own Eyes", being sponsored in conjunction with the John Jermain Memorial Library. The purpose of the series is to bring members of the local community together to learn from one another from experts who live amongst us.
The first of the series begins on Thursday, April 10 at 7 pm at Bay Street Theatre. With "My Own Eyes: Ken Dorph, An Evening With My Friends, the Arabs."
The Arab World, to most Americans, is dark and complex and, in recent years, threatening. But to Dorph -- a long-time Sag Harbor resident and parent, who has spent much of his career working throughout the region -- the Arab world, its people and culture, are among his favorites.
Dorph spent his early career in the Middle East and speaks several Arabic dialects. For over twenty years, he has worked globally to strengthen banks and financial systems. During the past ten years, he has focused on the Arab world and has become the World Bank's 'go to' guy for the region's economies. He has worked in Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, and Iraq.
When not fixing banks, Dorph throws himself into Arab culture and politics. Whether picking olives with a Palestinian farmer abutting a hostile Israeli settlement or chatting with young Muslim women about why the hijab is making a comeback, Dorph has the keen eye and open heart of a top-notch reporter. Entertaining, eye-opening, and informative, Dorph goes beyond today's headlines to share his vast knowledge and great fondness of a vitally important part of our world.
After Dorph presents his personal and intimate overview of the Mid-East, there will be a Q&A session and refreshments inspired by the region's cuisine. Suggested donation is $10. No reservations required. More information on future sessions will be announced soon.
