Theatre Three has chosen the best production to kick off their 46th season, giving patrons an ideal opportunity to embrace the Halloween spirit; Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The classic Tony Award winning musical, created by Stephen Sondheim (score) and Hugh Wheeler (book), runs through October 24th at the Port Jefferson venue.

Superbly directed by Executive Artistic Director Jeffrey Sanzel, the story, as we know, follows Sweeney Todd, formally Benjamin Barker, as he seeks vengeance on the Judge who has convicted him of bogus charges, among other grievances. Fifteen years Sweeney remained in exile and he has returned to London... tremendously angry. Also, there are several gripping twists and turns along the way.

Indeed, every person in the large cast is truly outstanding.

Theatre Three super talent Steve McCoy wonderfully portrays the title character in all his gruesome glory. Sweeney Todd enlists the unwilling assistance of pie maker Mrs. Lovett, marvelously portrayed by Suzanne Mason, to aid with his scheme of eliminating the rather unlikable Judge Turpin, portrayed by powerhouse Robert Butterley. Ms. Mason has several top notch performances, including "Poor Thing" and "The Worst Pies in London" in act one and "By the Sea" in act II. And Mr. McCoy and Mr. Butterley did a remarkable duet of "Pretty Women".

Also a highlight is Amanda Geraci as Johanna, of whom Judge Turpin is guardian. Ms. Geraci performs a stunning rendition of "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" as well as the beautiful "Kiss Me" with Bryan Elsesser who portrays Anthony, her love interest.

Besides the extraordinary company, you will also adore the overall appearance of the show.

Ronald Green's costumes are excellent and the multi-level set, designed by Randal Parsons, is enhanced beautifully by Robert W. Henderson's lighting design. Sari Feldman's choreography, even utilizing the side aisles at certain points, is also delightful and engaging. Additionally, the live orchestra, which practically sits in the audience, is also fantastic headed up by Musical Director Jackson Kohl.

Per usual, Theatre Three's incarnation of Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is another hit for the lovely Long Island venue. Even though it is not a joyful tale, an amazing cast and crazy story make for a bloody great night of theatre.
