Review: CABARET presented by The BroadHollow Theatre Company Image

Between college productions and the many local theatres Long Island has, it may seem there is always a production of the Kander and Ebb Tony winning classic Cabaret running. However, when you have a wonderful production like the one at BayWay Arts Centre, it indeed warrants another look. Excellently directed by Marion Waller, this superb incarnation, presented by the BroadHollow Theatre Company, runs at the adorable East Islip venue through May 12th boasting a stellar cast.

Set in Berlin in the 1920's, the tale centers on the nightlife at the Kit Kat Klub, a seedy cabaret, focusing on American writer Cliff Bradshaw and his relationship with Sally Bowles, a British performer at the club. Also highlighted is a romance between German boarding house owner, Fräulein Schneider, and Herr Schultz. And, of course, overseeing the action is the charismatic Emcee of the Kit Kat Klub.

Tom Brown, in his BroadHollow debut, is a charming (most of the time) Cliff and has a great rapport with NICOLE INTRAVIA who is terrific as Sally (though, perhaps a few emotional moments probably could have been played more vulnerable). Indeed an audience favorite is Ms. Intravia's renditions of "Maybe This Time" and "Don't Tell Mama" in act one showing fierce and natural talent. Additionally among the remarkable cast is George Ghossn as the magnetic Emcee. Particularly performing the iconic opening number, "Willkommen", Mr. Ghossn displays top-notch theatricality. Truth be told, the entire company is fantastic.

On Ms. Waller's clever creative team, Bob Butterley's bi-level set gives the ambiance an added touch of the Kit Kat Klub nightlife. This combined with Scott Earle's Fosse-inspired choreography makes for a visually stunning, busy show. This is enhanced beautifully by Hemraj Budhram's lighting and Joseph Kassner's costume design.

And so, Cabaret is certainly another hit for the BroadHollow Theatre Company. This will also have a sure-to-be-exciting run at BroadHollow's Elmont location beginning May 19th. Even if you have seen it before, this production is well worth another visit. Remember... everything is beautiful at the cabaret!
