Antigone’s father Oedipus sought the truth at the cost of losing his kingdom, his queen and his sight. A civil war erupts over which of Antigone’s brothers is to rule Thebes, and both die in the fight. The new leader, her uncle Creon, decides to make one of the brothers a hero, leaving the other to rot unburied. Will Antigone defy her uncle’s ordinance and bury her brother even if it means she will lose her life? Can a civilization and its ruler survive her act of civil disobedience? Sophocles’ first Theban tragedy was adapted by the French playwright Jean Anouilh, so powerful at its premier that it was banned by the authorities in 1943 Nazi occupied France.
