Lily and the Apple Seed, a play written by April Gentry-Sutterfield, will be directed by Stacy Pendergraft, Assistant Professor of Actor Training at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Rehearsals begin January 2nd; the tour opens on January 23rd and travels to elementary schools throughout Arkansas until April.

About Lily and the Apple Seed

With one in three American children overweight, Wildwood Park for the Arts’ Lily and the Apple Seed provides a safe and fun tool for educators to encourage healthy eating and active living. Every day after school, Lily settles in to watch her “favorite pal” Huck and eat all the salty and sweet Snackum’s products he sells until she falls asleep in front of the TV. When Lily is sent to Grandma’s for the summer, she learns to love fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and meats. Back home, Lily must make a decision—will she continue to make healthy choices like Grandma Francis, or will she return to the treats Huck tempts her with?

This educational tour for kindergarten through 5th graders addresses Nutrition and Personal Health and Safety standards on the Health and Wellness strand of the Arkansas K-8 Physical Education and Health Curriculum Frameworks. Students will enjoy the circus-like feel of the script; educators will appreciate the emotionally-safe manner in which these difficult issues are presented.
