TheatreSquared (T2) Artistic Director Robert Ford and Managing Director Martin Miller today announced TheatreSquared Season 7, the 2012/13 lineup. The four-play season includes the Olivier Award-winning comedy NOISES OFF, by Michael Frayn; PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT, a comedy by Tennessee Williams set on Christmas Eve; Stephen Karam's SONS OF THE PROPHET, a new work critically acclaimed in its 2011 Broadway debut; and the 2010 Pulitzer- and three-time Tony Award-winning musical NEXT TO NORMAL, with lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt.
The 2012/13 season launches with NOISES OFF, Michael Frayn's acclaimed, tour-de-force backstage farce. When a company of nine sets out to produce a touring comedy, frayed nerves and backstage betrayals plunge the production into chaos-from midnight rehearsals to a shambolic first night to the final disastrous performance. Critically hailed as one of the smartest comedies ever written, Noises Off, directed by Morgan Hicks, runs August 30-September 23, 2012 (recommended for ages 13+).
For the holiday season, TheatreSquared rediscovers Tennessee Williams's only comedy, PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT, set on Christmas Eve, 1958. With snow falling and Christmas specials on TV, George and Isabel are having the honeymoon from hell. After a calamitous wedding night, he's left her stranded with his old army buddy, Ralph, whose own wife has just stormed out. Rarely seen since its 1960 debut, Period of Adjustment is a humorous, moving exploration of love and the need for human warmth. December 6-30, 2012 (recommended for ages 13+).
In the New Year, TheatreSquared Season 7 continues with 2012 Pulitzer Prize finalist SONS OF THE PROPHET, by Stephen Karam, called "ravishing" (The New Yorker) and "soul-piercing" (The New York Times) in its 2011 Broadway debut. Joseph, a young Lebanese-American living in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, has a maddening job, unexplained chronic pain, and a crisis simmering at home. With equal parts comedy and tragedy, Sons of the Prophet is a refreshingly honest and painfully funny take on how we cope with wounds that refuse to heal. February 14–March 3, 2013 (recommended for ages 17+).
The 2012/13 T2 Subscription Series concludes with NEXT TO NORMAL, winner of three Tony Awards and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Featuring a compelling contemporary score, Next to Normal shatters the façade of a suburban family dealing with the direct and indirect effects of mental illness. To face the future, they must first come to terms with their past in this intense, emotional and ultimately uplifting musical. Next to Normal was chosen as one of the year's ten best shows by critics including The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and The New York Times. April 18–May 12, 2013 (recommended for ages 13+).
The 2013 ARKANSAS NEW PLAY FESTIVAL, TheatreSquared's fifth annual celebration of new works, will be staged June 14-16, 2013, with dates and titles for the celebration of new works to be announced in January 2013. The Festival seeks to give voice to emerging playwrights whose timely and relevant stories resonate with the shifting demographics of Arkansas and mid-America, and will be staged both at T2's home theatre in Fayetteville and at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock.
