Lauren Gunderson's critically acclaimed new drama, I And You, opens this week at TheatreSquared, with two specially priced previews on October 12 and 13 and a celebratory opening night on October 14. This "sharp and funny, buoyant" (Washington Post) new drama about the existential crisis of being an almost-adult is the winner of 2014 American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award. Performances are scheduled for October 12-November 6, 2016, with tickets ($15-$45) available at theatre2.org or (479) 443-5600.
"This play will take you utterly by surprise," said T2 Artistic Director Robert Ford. "Two 17 year-olds crammed into an attic bedroom with posterboard and a deadline - it's not where you'd expect to see a transformative, redemptive story unfold. For this young woman and man, everything is at stake. You'll be right there with them - cautious, amused, intrigued, and ultimately transported in the best of ways."
Classmates but virtual strangers, 17 year-olds Caroline and Anthony are thrust together for a school project that's due tomorrow. Caroline tells Anthony his start on a poster about Walt Whitman is beyond pathetic. Then, as the night progresses, the two discover a larger mystery has brought them together.
The production is directed by Michael Landman, who previously directed The 39 Steps and Rabbit Hole at TheatreSquared as well as A Little War in Little Rock and The Spiritualist as part of the Arkansas New Play Festival. I And You, Lauren Gunderson's "breakthrough play" (The New York Times), has been re-imagined on dozens of stages throughout the country since its 2014 premiere, making Gunderson one of the nation's most-produced playwrights.
The cast for I And You includes Alexis Di Gregorio as Caroline and Jelani Alladin as Anthony. The lead creative team includes scenic designer Kate Noll, lighting designer Jacquelyn Cox, Sound Designer Will Eubanks, costume designer Ruby Kemph, properties master Brodie Jasch, and stage manager David A. Loranca.
TheatreSquared's production is made possible in part with support from show sponsors Stout Executive Search, Steve and Linda Nelson, and Peter and Ann Leer.
