Continuing its tenth anniversary season, the Onyx is excited to premiere the new musical comedy Mister Wives. With book and lyrics by Second City alum Natalie Shipman and music by composer Mark Wherry, Mister Wives takes as its inspiration the Vegas-based TLC reality show Sister Wives.
What started off as a parody eventually transformed into a satire. "Natalie skips the obvious jokes," says producing director Troy Heard. "Mister Wives isn't specifically aboutthepolyMormonsectthat'safrequentpunchline, butskewers contemporary gender roles, religion, and reality TV in general."
The show flips the usual "harem-esque" scenario by introducing Kady, a polyandrous wife, as she courts her fourth husband-to-be, the unsuspecting Rob. The first act follows Rob acclimation to the new lifestyle, while the second act details the fall-out from just "too much testosterone."
Performances of Mister Wives will be October 15 through 31, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm. with a Sunday matinee on October 25 at 5 pm. Tickets are $20 for General Admission. Tickets may be purchased online at www.onyxtheatre.com or at the Box Office an hour before show time.
