On Wednesday, September 25, for one night only, Sierra Stages and Miners Foundry Cultural Center present THE EFFECT OF GAMMA RAYS ON MAN-IN-THE-MOON MARIGOLDS, the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama by Paul Zindel, as the fourth in it series of informal play readings titled "Theater by the Book".

The reading is directed by Diane Fetterly and takes place at the Miners Foundry in Nevada City at 7:30 PM. Admission is FREE, with a suggested donation of $10 to cover costs. There are no advance tickets. The doors open at 7 PM. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

Paul Zindel's masterpiece received an Obie Award, a New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and in 1972 was made into a movie directed by Paul Newman and starring JoAnne Woodward. The play tells the story of a single mother, Beatrice Hunsdorfer, and her teenage daughters. Abandoned by her husband, Beatrice thinks she just needs the right opportunity, and everything will get better. Volatile older daughter Ruth seems sadly fated to repeat her mother's mistakes in her own life. Shy younger daughter Tillie is the joke of her school and her family, until a teacher opens her eyes to the wonders of science. When Tilllie's project on the effect of gamma rays on man-in-the-moon marigold seeds is chosen for the school science fair, the dysfunctional family dynamic comes to a head. The cast includes Trish Adair, Maddie Gardiner, Lucy Gardiner, Dinah Smith and Xochitl Husted.

THE EFFECT OF GAMMA RAYS ON MAN-IN-THE-MOON MARIGOLDS is the fourth play reading in the "Theater by the Book" series presented by Sierra Stages and the Miners Foundry Cultural Center. The final two readings in the series will be Stephen Dietz's highly theatrical version of DRACULA (from the novel by Bram Stoker) on Wednesday, October 25 and Allan Miller's psychological drama THE FOX (based on the novella of the same name by D.H. Lawrence) on Wednesday, November 23.
