Majestic Repertory Theatre continues its 2018-19 season with a dark comedy by this year's hottest playwright Lucas Hnath: A PUBLIC READING OF AN UNPRODUCED SCREENPLAY ABOUT THE DEATH OF Walt Disney.
Tonight, Walt is going to read you a screenplay he wrote. It's about his last days on earth. It's about a city he's going to build that's going to change the world. And it's about his brother. It's about everyone who loves him so much, and it's about how sad they're going to be when he's gone. Right? I mean, how can they live without him? How can anyone live without him?
"This play hit me like a sledgehammer," says director Troy Heard. "On one hand it's an extraordinarily simple premise: Walt Disney and three other actors have gathered around a table to have a staged reading of a screenplay, seemingly about his life and death. But that's just the meta theatrical surface. Dig a little deeper and it's about humankind's desire to control their destiny - to write their own script - only to find that more often than not that script can spiral out of control. And tonight, it does."
The play touches on the dark side of Disney, including the lemming documentary scandal, his failed attempt to make EPCOT a functional working city, and the urban legend of his cryogenically frozen head. "I put this show in our season not only because of its masterful
complexity, but Las Vegas's relative proximity to Disneyland and Walt's legacy makes this play one our audience will especially appreciate.
A PUBLIC READING OF AN UNPRODUCED SCREENPLAY ABOUT THE DEATH OF Walt Disney continues Majestic Rep's third season of shows, which includes the hilarious comedy THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA MCBRIDE and the Vegas premiere of the Broadway musical SPRING AWAKENING.
