Majestic Repertory Theatre's artistic director Troy Heard announced the company's 2018-19 season today. Featuring seven productions in the MainStage lineup and two productions in the Backstage series, the season includes the world premiere of Amber Ruffin's ("Late Night with Seth Meyers") musical Bigfoot; the regional premiere of Rachel Bykowski's high school football drama Tight End; a full-scale immersive adaptation of Shakespeare's dark comedy Measure for Measure set in 1970s Las Vegas; the Las Vegas premiere of Lucas Hnath's mind (and tongue) twisting A Public Reading of an Unproduced Screenplay about the Death of Walt Disney; intimate new stagings of the classic musical Cabaret, the adolescent angst rock musical Spring Awakening and Thornton Wilder's Our Town; the Vegas premiere of Matthew Lopez's Elvis-meets-drag queens comedy The Legend of Georgia McBride; and the world premiere of Heard's "Tales from the Crypt" tinged holiday thriller Krampus.
"As we head into our third season, we've been able to gauge what kind of plays our audiences enjoy," says Heard. "Whether it's a classic script or world premiere, what excites them most are their intimate experiences with the stories that only Majestic can provide. Our first foray into immersive theater was the wildly popular Clown Bar. Using that as inspiration we'll bring you into the action of three classic texts this year. First, we'll transform the space into the notorious Weimar-era Kit Kat Club as we present Cabaret; following that, you'll get out of your seats and actually engage with the characters in our adaptation of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure - where we rearrange the space into various government offices, a brothel, a convent, and most excitingly: a disco. Finally, taking inspiration from Tappan Wilder's call for new visions of his uncle Thornton's classic Our Town, Majestic will become a New Hampshire civic center, like a Elks Lodge or Knight of Columbus Hall, complete with a pot luck supper courtesy of At Your Service Catering as the story unfolds around you."
Majestic Rep also announces the debut of its Majestic Youth Ensemble, an education outreach program that features classes and workshops throughout the year led by Strip professionals under the guidance of Education Director Adriana Chavez. Heard says, "Up to now we've had ad hoc interns from various high schools and UNLV. Formalizing our education program has been a priority for us from the beginning, and now that we're entering our third year, we have a better infrastructures to implement this. Spring Awakening will be geared for our interns both onstage and behind the scenes. Additionally, we have discounted tickets to all shows to a single price of fifteen dollars for high school students."
