When it comes to singin' and swingin' the standards made famous by Frank, Dean, Sammy, Bobby and Tony, no one does it better in the Bay Area than Jonathan Poretz. Having starred as Frank Sinatra in the popular "The Rat Pack is Back!" show during its extended run in San Francisco as well as in Las Vegas, Poretz is now bringing his own successful show to the J'LaChic Theatre 39 on Pier 39 at Fisherman's Wharf.
For three consecutive Wednesday nights, May 13, 20 and 27, Poretz's "A Swingin' Night at the Sands" will transform the Pier into a little slice of Las Vegas the way it used to be. Featuring a swinging Basie-styled 12-piece big band, directed by Richard Nelson Hall, and the comedy of Jeff Applebaum, who played Joey Bishop in the Rat Pack is Back!, the show harkens back to a special time in America's history, when show business was more about the show than the business.
Weaving together some of the best-loved classics from that era, including Fly Me To The Moon, Mack The Knife, Luck Be A Lady, I've Got You Under My Skin, My Way and many more, with wonderful inside stories about the men who made the Vegas strip famous, Poretz successfully recreates what it was like to be sitting front row in the Sands' iconic Copa Room.
"Just like with the Rat Pack show, we meet audience members who actually saw Frank and company in Las Vegas and thank us for bringing back a little slice of their youth," comments Poretz. "But we're also finding that the younger audience members are very hip to this music and scene, which was the essence of cool back then and remains cool today."
