Unicorn Theatre will close out the first half of their 2009-2010 season with Christopher Durang's philosophical comedy, Miss Witherspoon, which runs through January 3 on The Jerome Stage. There will be no performance on December 24 or January 1, but there will be a performance on Christmas Day, December 25th at 8pm. The Unicorn will also host a New Year's Eve event featuring pre-show drinks and appetizers and a post-show toast with the cast. The reception starts at 7pm with the show starting at 8pm. Single tickets are $45 for this event. Unicorn Theatre subscribers can upgrade their tickets for $20.
The second half of Unicorn Theatre's 2009-2010 season will feature three dynamically contrasting productions. Grey Gardens, a 2007 Tony nominated musical, is based on the 1975 documentary about "Big Edie" and "Little Edie"
Bouvier Beale, the eccentric aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. Grey Gardens, by
Doug Wright with music by
Scott Frankel and lyrics by
Michael Korie, follows this notorious pair as they spiral downward from rich, socially polished aristocrats to an isolated existence in a deteriorating mansion in the Hamptons overridden by cats and raccoons. The show is directed and choreographed by
Nedra Dixon with musical direction by
Anthony T. Edwards. The cast is led by
Kathleen Warfel and Cathy Barnett and features
Brandon Sollenberger,
Keenan Manuel Ramos, Robert
Gibby Brand, Seth Golay,
Lauren Braton, Erin Lowe and Katherine McNamara. Grey Gardens will run on the Mainstage January 29 through February 28 with single tickets going on sale January 4.
Next, the Unicorn's Jerome Stage will feature the world premiere of the twisted romantic comedy, Green Whales by Lia Romeo. Green Whales is hot from the Unicorn's In-Progress New Play Reading Series and is the third of three co-productions with UMKC Theatre this season. The play, directed by Cynthia Levin, will showcase a cast consisting of Anna Safar, Vanessa Severo, Dean Vivian and Darren Kennedy. Green Whales runs March 5 through March 28 with single tickets going on sale February 8.
The 2009-2010 season finale will be And Her Hair Went With Her by
Zina Camblin. This funny and poignant play features salon owner, Jasmine and her radical assistant, Angie as they dish the dirt on their clients and discover how self-image affects us all. A wild range of women, personalities, hairstyles and trends emerge in this blowout of African-American sisterhood and identity. And Her Hair Went With Her is also from the Unicorn's In-Progress New Play Reading Series and will be directed by Jacqueline L. Gafford and feature a cast of
Nedra Dixon and Toccarra Cash playing all characters. The show will run April 28 through May 23 with single tickets going on sale April 5.
