Each summer Starlight Theatre puts a free night of musical theatre within reach for clients of qualifying not-for-profit organizations. Since the theatre's inaugural season in 1951, the Starlight Community Ticket Program has distributed 364 free tickets to every night of every performance to area not-for-profits and the individuals they serve.
During the 2012 season, six Broadway shows and 32 performance nights are included in the program, making more than 11,000 free tickets are available for donation. To be considered to receive tickets, interested community and not-for-profit groups must complete and submit a Starlight Community Ticket Program application by mail by Friday, March 16.
Applications and program details are available online at www.kcstarlight.com/community_outreach/community_ticket_requests.aspx or can be requested from Starlight house manager Bob Potemski at community@kcstarlight.com or 816.997.1163.
The Starlight Community Ticket Program is available to 501(c)(3) charitable organizations operating in Missouri and Kansas. Starlight gives priority consideration to organizations that serve underprivileged and at-risk youth, the medically dependent or disabled, and low-income senior citizens.
In 2011, 142 organizations participated in the program, and 14,196 free tickets were distributed for Starlight's Broadway shows. More than 30 groups were first-time recipients in 2011.
"Our Community Ticket Program provides a live theatre experience to individuals who would otherwise be unable to afford one due to economic, medical or other restrictive causes," said Denton Yockey, Starlight president and executive producer. "We are thrilled to continue this Starlight tradition and be able to share the magic of a live Broadway musical under the stars with so many Kansas Citians. We look forward to welcoming new organizations in 2012 as we also continue to serve the needs of groups that return each summer."
