Starlight Named Area's 'Best,' 'Favorite' in Three Local Award Competitions

Starlight Theatre has been entertaining Kansas City residents and visitors since 1951, and, if the results of local award competitions are a good barometer of success, it appears those individuals who attend Starlight like what they see and hear.
At yesterday's reception to announce the 5th Annual KC Visitors' Choice Awards, Starlight's name was called frequently as the list of 2011 winners was revealed. For the fifth straight year, Starlight took home top honors in the program's "Favorite Performing Arts Venue" category. Starlight also won for "Favorite Concert/Live Music Venue" for the second consecutive year. And, in a new category introduced this year, Starlight's presentation of Mamma Mia! was selected as the "Favorite Arts Performance."
The Kansas City Convention & Visitors Association initiated the awards program in 2007 to give travelers the chance to recognize their favorite Kansas City businesses in several categories. To ensure that winners are true visitor choices, only votes from outside the five-county metropolitan area are counted. This year's online polls were open from July 18 through Sept. 2.
"The Visitors' Choice Awards program calls on Kansas City's 21.6 million annual visitors to speak their minds on what they love about our city," KCCVA president and CEO Rick Hughes said in a prepared release. "The program also recognizes local businesses that exemplify the friendly Midwestern charm for which Kansas City is known."
The KCCVA honors are the most recent in a string of accolades that Starlight has received since mid-summer. In Ingram's magazine's Best of Business Kansas City 2011 Awards, Starlight was honored with a first-place Gold Award for "Best Performing Arts Venue" and a second-place Silver Award for "Best Theater." And, in KC Magazine's 2011 City's Best competition, Starlight took home the award for "Best Live Theater Venue."
