First produced in 1982, Jitney is the only play of Wilson's famous "Pittsburgh Cycle" plays never to be produced on Broadway. However it did win New York Drama Critics Award for Best New Play and Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off Broadway Play. Jitney was also staged at London's National Theatre and won the Olivier Award for best play of the year in 2001.
Jitney is set in the autumn of 1977 in a worn down makeshift taxi station and is another stirring account bristling with the energy of the black American experience in the twentieth century. The two act play is directed by Karen Paisley.
