The Department of Theatre Arts and Dance at Loyola University New Orleans debuts the madcap comic play, "Anton in Show Business," a sharp, wry comedy based on three actresses who have been cast in an ill-fated production of Anton Chekhov's play, "The Three Sisters." The play will run in Loyola's Lower Depths Theater on Feb. 8, 9, 10, 11 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 12 at 2 p.m.
Written by Jane Martin and directed by Loyola theatre arts lecturer Ann Mahoney Kadar, "Anton in Show Business" explores the typical needs of producing classical theatre in a modern world and the zany antics that ensue. The all-female cast takes on gender roles, stereotypes and the mysteries of life in Martin's farcical backstage exploration of the relationships between art and audience in show business.
Often described by critics as an open love letter to theatre, "Anton in Show Business" premiered at the Humana Festival in Louisville, Ky. in 2000 and received the American Theatre Critics/Steinberg New Play Award in 2001.
