Kansas City Rep congratulates the star of their 2016 production of The Santaland Diaries, Claybourne Elder, on his newest role on Broadway, as the soldier in Sunday in the Park with George, which was recently announced.

The show will have a limited run, and previews begin Feb. 11, 2017. The show closes on April 23, 2017. The production, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, will be an expanded version of the New York City Center benefit concert that he starred in this past fall. Elder will also serve as Gyllenhaal's understudy throughout the run.

This production will also be the first show in 49 years at Hudson Theater, which is being reconverted into a stage after decades of other uses, according to the New York Times. Sunday in the Park with George is a much-anticipated revival with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine.

And the Sondheim theme continues on the local front, as KC Rep is presenting Side by Side by Sondheim, which is a celebration of Sondheim's music, at Spencer Theatre Jan. 27 - Feb. 19, 2017, directed by Eric Rosen. The revival will star Shanna Jones, who just finished a turn co-starring as Shanna the Elf with Elder as Crumpet the Elf in David Sedaris' THE SANTALAND DIARIES. But the Sondheim roots go even deeper at KC Rep for these three, Elder's first show was Roadshow at the Public, he starred in Sunday in the Park with George at KC Rep and at the Signature, performed in concerts for Sondheim's 80th birthday, and on a personal note, met his husband, Eric Rosen while performing in Into the Woods at KC Rep.

Comedian, writer and musician Claybourne Elder is a Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel nominee best known for his performances in New York and on Broadway originating the roles of Buck in Bonnie and Clyde, Hollis in Stephen Sondheim's Road Show, Michael-Victor in Venice, and Ollie in Tennessee Williams' One Arm (Drama Desk Nomination Best Actor.) He was also seen in the NY revivals of Two by Two (starring Jason Alexander), as Joe Jr. in Allegro (Lucille Lortel Nomination Best Actor), as Eddie in Do I Hear A Waltz and the Soldier in in the Park with George starring Jake Gyllenhaal, both at City Center. KC Rep audiences will recognize him for his performances in The Santaland Diaries, as Joe in Angels in America Parts I and II directed by David Cromer, as George in Sunday in the Park..., as the Wolf/Cinderella's Prince in Moises Kaufman's production of Into the Woods. Regionally highlights include Curly in Oklahoma at Music Theatre of Wichita, George in the critically acclaimed Signature Theatre revival of Sunday in the Park...(Helen Hayes Award Best Musical), On television he played Pete O'Malley on The Carrie Diaries, Flatbush Luck and It Could Be Worse.
