Eric Rosen, artistic director of Kansas City Repertory Theatre, has added CABARET to the Rep's 2010-11 season lineup. Rosen will direct the Tony Award-winning musical written by two of America's most distinguished and prolific songwriters, Kansas City native John Kander and Fred Ebb, with a book by Joe Masteroff. CABARET will run March 18-April 10, 2011 at Spencer Theatre.
Set in a seedy nightclub in 1931 Berlin, as the Nazis are rising to power, CABARET focuses on the complicated relationship between a young English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and an American writer Clifford Bradshaw.

Written in 1966, CABARET is considered by many to be one of the best musicals written by Kander and Ebb. The original Broadway production, directed by their frequent collaborator Harold Prince, was nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning 8, including for best musical, best composer and lyricist, and best director.

Additional Kander and Ebb musicals include ZORBA (1958), CHICAGO (1975), KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN (1992), FOSSE (1999), CURTAINS (2006) and THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS (2010). The show tunes "Cabaret", "New York, New York", "Maybe This Time" and "All That Jazz" are among their most well-known songs.

In addition to being awarded numerous Tonys, Oscars, Grammys and Emmys, Kander and Ebb were honored in 1998 by the Kennedy Center for their contributions to theatre and music. As Kander stated in a February 1997 article with Marilyn Stasio in American Theatre, "if you're going to write on a canvas of some size, the Broadway theatre is still the only place that offers you that opportunity."
