Band Geeks is a musical comedy conceived by Tommy Newman, who draws experiences from his own high school marching band trials and tribulations. Band Geeks is the Kansas City PREMIERE, and the second play of the current season, directed by Guest Director, Greg Shaw; who took on the piece a few years prior with Pittsburgh High School, bringing it to the hailed Kansas Thespian Conference. The production runs April 19 - April 22, 2018 at The Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center; tickets are on sale now.
About Band Geeks: In the tradition of "Glee" and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, comes Band Geeks, a celebration of the tribulations of the millions who have spent football halftimes pounding out Sousa-like renditions of "Maria." Whether you were in the band, on the team or in the stands, you'll recognize the woes and revel in the fun of Band Geeks.
With just nine members and dwindling funds, the Cuyahoga High Marching Beavers are close to extinction. When a troubled athlete is relegated to their ranks, Elliott, the tuba-playing band captain and Laura, his best friend, must find a way to unite the band, embrace their inner geek and save the Marching Beavers.
Opening with Little Shop of Horrors directed by Zach Faust, Band Geeks will be followed by the one-night only A Very Musical Surprise directed by Bree Patterson (May 18). In the summer of 2018, Steven Eubank will direct Falsettos (June 14-24) at the Arts Asylum.
The cast of Band Geeks includes newcomer Matthew Koehler as Mr. Hornsby, and is joined by Faust Theatre's Heathers the Musical alumni McKenna Shaw (Laura), Christoph Nevins (Spitz), Zoe Marie Lepper (Molly), and Tessa Hake (Natalia). Samuel Wise (Elliott), Nathaniel Rasson (Jake), Luke Knopke (Stuart), Phil Licata (Alvin), Reily Harker (Kyle), Ashley Elliott-Rowe (Joyce) and Janie Carr (Nicole) round out the rest of the cast.
