Theatre for Young America presents E.B. White's classic and touching tale of friendship, and sacrifice with its production of Charlotte's Web from March 3, 2015 through April 11, 2015. Performances take place on the H&R Block City Stage on level B in Union Station. Union station is located at 30 W. Pershing Road in Kansas City, Missouri.
When a piglet named Wilbur, the runt of the litter, is born on the Arable farm it seems he will be in for an awful fate. But a young girl named Fern begs the farmer to let her raise the little pig, thus saving Wilbur temporarily. Arriving at the Zuckerman farm, Wilbur is lonely and worries about his eventual date with the butcher block. But an unlikely ally, Charlotte, a spider who lives in the barn doorway, weaves a plan to save Wilbur from eventual slaughter. Suddenly words like "Some Pig" or "Radiant" begin appearing over the barnyard door. Soon people from miles away come to see the mysteriously appearing words and the amazing pig they describe, not realizing it is Charlotte's handiwork that has made Wilbur the talk of the county. When Wilbur wins a prize at the county fair Farmer Zuckerman believes that Wilbur is indeed a special kind of pig and spares him his life for good. Finally, Charlotte, who has reached old age for a spider, needs one important favor from Wilbur. She is about to die, and as she hands him her egg-sack, she asks him to care for the babies she will never live to see. E. B. White wrote the book Charlotte's Web by drawing upon memories of the barnyard animals he knew on his childhood farm in Maine. TYA's manager, Gene Mackey, wrote this adaptation for the stage, carefully reflecting the hilarity and deep emotion of the book and retaining the beauty of E.B. White's language.
