SUMMARY
The Wardrobe Manager oversees the organization, run, repair, care and maintenance of completed costumes for PNB productions. Manage maintenance and running of the ballet’s repertory season including supervising and working alongside the wardrobe staff, dressers and maintenance crew in the organization. The Wardrobe Manager generates all related documentation, and ensures costumes are prepared for rehearsals and performances in a timely and cost-effective manner. The Wardrobe Manager works with the Costume Shop Manager and Wardrobe Assistant to manage costume rentals program for PNB.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
Wardrobe Manager
• Manage in-house wardrobe staff
• Hire, train and manage costume maintenance and dressing staff via union dispatch as needed.
• Forecast wardrobe department budgets for future repertoire, seasons, and tours. (Works with Costume Shop Manager on maintaining and working within established budgets – minimize crew time inefficiencies and overtime)
• Develop, coordinate and implement systems, policies and procedures on both department and show levels.
• Create and distribute union maintenance and dresser schedules.
• Create dresser tracks, dressing assignments, and train dressing crew as needed.
• Create dressing room inventory and dressing instructions for dressing crew.
• Collaborate with costume shop to create laundry instructions for every costume piece.
• Manage and lead the wardrobe team in the costume & show inventorying and crate packing, as well as organize and lead the packing of costumes to and from the venue.
• Liaise with artistic staff and costume shop to create daily costume assignment sheets and consult in emergency casting conversations.
• Conduct fittings and alteration as needed.
• Inform the Costume Shop Manager of any changes and issues relating to performers and costumes during show runs.
• Coordinate transportation of costumes to and from costume shop and performance venue with costume shop and production department. Includes traveling to PNB storage facilities to pack and unpack costumes.
• Coordinate dressing room and equipment requirements with production department and venue.
• Update and archive show paperwork in database to reflect final run.
• Maintain PNB stock of performance tights and undergarment, laundry supplies, to include sourcing flesh tone tights and dance belts.
• Support outreach, fundraising, and publicity events requiring costume elements.
• Maintain a safe, secure, and legal work environment as per both PNB Policies and the IATSE Local #887 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• Assist in the negotiation of Local #887 Collective Bargaining Agreement with PNB.
• Coordinate with Costume Shop, Artistic and Production departments to determine feasibility and schedule of costume rentals.
• Receive and record incoming payments and insurance certificates for costume rentals
• Create rental inventories and packing lists, and wardrobe instruction sheets to send with costumes
• Travel to PNB storage facilities to pick up and return costumes for rentals as needed
• Pack costumes to ship. Coordinate with Production regarding sets and props if a full production is to be shipped
• Inspect returned costumes for damage and cleanliness. Discuss with Costume Shop Manager to determine security deposit refund or invoice
QUALIFICATIONS
• Strong knowledge of wardrobe maintenance and laundry.
• Experience in theatrical costume construction, alteration, and repair.
• Experience in working backstage on costumed productions.
• Excellent communication skills and strong problem solving skills.
• Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.
• Able to read and create detailed paperwork and proficient in MSOffice and Access.
• Able to work extended hours and modify work weeks when necessary for specific production needs.
• Minimum of two years working in ballet or theatre costume shops or comparable experience and some budgeting experience preferred.
• Demonstrated skill regarding attention to detail including a high degree of accuracy
• Ability to organize and prioritize a wide variety of projects and meet all established deadlines.
• Ability to perform well under pressure. Flexibility to function with sometimes changing priorities and schedules while remaining tactful when under stress.
• Self-driven with ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Must maintain high personal standards including punctuality and reliability.
• Must have a current, valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
