Virginia Repertory Theatre has several openings for performers in the Spring 2023 touring season! Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis until all roles have been filled.
The spring touring season runs from January to May with four to eight tours on the road. We travel extensively in our home state of Virginia and throughout most of the United States.
Virginia Rep on Tour is full-time employment during the course of the contract.
Pay: $480/wk.
Contract Dates: January 2, 2023-May 18, 2023 (exact dates vary by show)
Transportation costs while on tour, including all hotels, are arranged and paid for by Virginia Rep. Many tours have consecutive weeks of travel while others are mostly comprised of day-trips. Company housing available in Richmond for non local artists.
Cast sizes range from three to five actors and these actors are expected to perform, serve as crew, and share the driving of the Virginia Rep Van.
We will follow all CDC guidelines and safety precautions during rehearsals and performances.
All cast members must be vaccinated against Covid-19. You will need to show proof of vaccination before rehearsals begin.

I Have a Dream
(Straight Play)
Contract Dates: January 2, 2023-May 17, 2023
The phenomenal impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is chronicled in this compelling dramatization of the life and times of one of the most influential and charismatic leaders of the “American Century”. Inspired by the arrest of Rosa Parks, Dr. King becomes the prime mover behind the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, putting his philosophy of nonviolent protest to work. He gains national recognition and becomes the dominant force in the Civil Rights Movement during its decade of greatest achievement.
Seeking the following roles:
Martin Luther King, Jr. - Male, adult artist (18+) to play various ages. African American. The story follows Martin from his childhood in Atlanta and highlights various aspects of his life leading up to his historic “I Have a Dream” speech. (Also plays Jack Quacker the Duck/Harry the Eagle in The Ugly Duckling)
Actor 4 - Female Identifying. African American. Ensemble roles including Coretta Scott King, Alberta King, Rosa Parks, and more. (Also plays Melissa the Baron’s Daughter in The Ugly Duckling)
The Ugly Duckling

We all know the fable of the swan who grows up “ugly” in a family of ducks, later to find his appearance changing as he discovers his true identity. In this musical adaptation, VA Rep on Tour takes the classic Ugly Duckling and unites it with the Burmese tale of the mole that hates dirt and the Inuit tale of the bald eagle with a full head of hair. Together, these three “misfits” work diligently to earn their home on the King’s estate and find self-confidence only friendship and accomplishment can provide.
Seeking actors to play the following roles:
Jack Quacker the Duck/Harry the Eagle - Male, adult artist (18+). African American. Jack - Constantly bickering with his sibling Mac and picking on their brother Honker. Harry - a bald eagle with hair, befriends Honker. (Also plays Martin Luther King, Jr. in I Have a Dream)
Melissa the Baron’s Daughter - Female, adult artist (18+). Kind and gentle daughter of the Baron. Cursed to not smile or laugh until she learns the true meaning of happiness. (Also plays Actor 4 in I Have a Dream)
Tales as Tall as the Sky

Designed to encourage interest in books and reading, Tales as Tall as the Sky is the story of three children who gather in their tree house at the end of summer and complain that they have nothing exciting to do. When one produces a book of American tall tales, the three begin to explore the wild and adventurous stories of Pecos Bill, John Henry, and Hurricane Hallie, bringing the literary genre to vibrant life.

The Maggie Walker Story

The child of a formerly enslaved woman, Maggie Walker was born in 1864 in the Virginia home of Elizabeth Van Lew, a Union spy. When she was nine, Maggie’s father was murdered and her mother had no money to bury him. Young Maggie joined the Order of St. Luke, a national savings group formed to pay the burial expenses of poor black people. As a high school senior, Maggie helped to establish an appropriate graduation for her class by organizing the nation’s first civil rights strike by black students. As an adult, she led an expanded St. Luke’s, becoming the nation’s first woman bank president and a powerful force in civil rights. The Maggie Walker Story explores the life and times of Maggie as a daughter, mother, business woman, and more.
Seeking an actor to play the following role:
Maggie Walker/Elizabeth Mitchell - Female, adult artist (18+) to play various ages. African American. Part of a three-person cast, this actor plays Maggie Walker’s mother, Elizabeth Mitchell, to establish the beginning of Maggie’s life and then plays historical figure Maggie Walker at various times throughout her ambitious and sometimes tumultuous life. (Also plays Alice/Bowleg Gerber/Hallie in Tales as Tall as the Sky)
WHAT TO PREPARE:
Please submit a video audition containing a short monologue (under 1 minute) and a 60-90 second song* (roughly 32 bars) from a musical theatre selection or a pop/contemporary selection. Please select works that are family appropriate.
*If you are only submitting for The Maggie Walker Story/Tales as Tall as the Sky, you do not need to submit a song. You must submit a song to be considered for I Have a Dream/The Ugly Duckling.
