Upper School Technical Director/Theater Tech Teacher: Leave Replacement - The Berkeley Carroll School

Berkeley Carroll is a Pre-K through grade 12 college preparatory school of 1000 students located in the Park Slope section of New York City. The Berkeley Carroll School seeks a Technical Director and Theater Tech Educator to teach full time from on or about December 11th, 2023-March 15, 2024. Please note Berkeley Carroll is on Winter Break beginning Saturday the December 23rd through Sunday January 7th. The candidate must be prepared to teach one foundational Theatre Tech class (grades 9 and 10) and co teach one Advanced Production Design class (Grades 10-12) with our Lighting designer/Production Manager, as well as supervising and supporting the technical aspects of the production season.

The ideal candidate will have:

● High school teaching experience and strong knowledge of theatrical carpentry, lighting, sound, prop design, and stage management

● The ability to assess the instructional and educational needs of the students, and to develop and implement interesting, effective lessons

● A strong foundation in carpentry, as well as a working knowledge of other departments (lighting, sound, costumes, etc. . .)

● The ability to oversee a professional sound designer, lighting designer, costume designer, and scenic designer in coordinating the Upper School Musical.

With the support of our in-house production manager, the Director of Theater and the Arts Director, the TD will:

● will support in the engineering and production of working drawings for the Winter musical

● create supply orders

● generate a timeline for set and prop construction

● support students and staff in the build and installation of all scenic elements. ● support students and production manager in guiding students in all departments through the tech process

● supervise and support the run crew backstage during shows

Daily duties may include:

● AV support for meetings and guests

● General care and maintenance of the theater space and shop

After school duties will include:

● Rehearsal/build time form 3:30-6:30 weekdays

● Three or four Saturday calls (10am-5pm) as needed

● Extra evening hours during tech week and strikes

Salary and benefits are highly competitive and will be offered commensurate with experience and credentials. The annual salary range for this full time position is 65k-90k, compensation will be prorated for the time worked in the 23-24 academic year.
