The Theatrical Wig and Make-up Assistant supports the Wig and Make-up Department according to production, administrative and shop needs in preparation for and execution of all Houston Grand Opera performance activities as assigned. This is a seasonal position from September through May.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
-Assist the Wig and Makeup Department Head in maintaining a well-organized and well-run wig and make-up shop, including creation of storage solutions.
-Focus on the build and style of wigs, and hair decor/crafts, and facial hair assigned. Follow up with the repair and maintenance of the wigs on production or in inventory.
-Serve as Principal Makeup Artist on all mainstage productions. Oversee the maintenance of all wigs and makeup materials during the productions in the absence of the Wig/Makeup Dept. Head.
-Assist with wig measurement and fitting appointments.
-Create hair decor/ crafts as needed.
-Assist administratively and maintain inventor of wigs and makeup.
-Assist with packing for load-in and pack-out the theater.
-Supervise crew in absence of the department head.
Qualifications:
Candidate should possess an appropriate combination of the following: education in the field of hair and/or make-up design, three years related professional experience, experience as a make-up artist/hairdresser. Knowledge of wig construction, styling and maintenance techniques, facial hair construction, styling and maintenance techniques, prosthetics, historical periods and their appropriate hairstyles preferred. Ideal candidate has strong interpersonal communication skills, tact and flexibility in stressful situations, and ability to work sensitively with artistic teams, performers and other member s of staff. Must have strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Must be available to work evening and weekend hours as necessary.
