Mind The Gap is a fast-growing scenic fabrication shop located in Brooklyn, NY that serves a handful of industries. We primarily work in Events, Theater and Permanent Installs with other eclectic projects thrown in. We are sticklers for attention to detail and providing a high-quality product that we are proud to stand behind by providing clear, accurate, and consistent communication with our shop floor. GENERAL FUNCTION:
The Technical Designer is the linchpin of the design/fabrication process. They are responsible for planning and engineering safe, cost-effective, and on-point for design intent solutions to some of the hardest to solve problems in the industry. The Technical Designer is responsible for creating Shop-floor working drawings from Designer concepts, drawings, sketches, and models. Working with the Project Manager to determine construction means and methods, creation of material orders, the building of CAD models and layout drawings, and ensuring that technical intent is clearly communicated to the fabrication team.
The Technical Designer must have strong leadership ability and broad knowledge of both theatrical and event standards and practices. Including but not limited to:
Strong organizational skills
Self-starter who needs little to no supervision
Ability to lead and mentor those around them
Create, implement and maintain new systems and processes to enable us to scale as we grow larger
Impeccable attention to detail regarding all logistics and deliverables under tight deadlines
Always be looking to improve processes and not be happy to do it the way it has always been done.
Can maintain a positive attitude while working on high profile, high expectation, and time-sensitive projects.
Excellent communicator and ability to keep abreast of scope and deadline changes
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience: At least two years’ practical work experience in either Theatrical or Live Event Technical Design is required, ideally in a scene shop environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In-depth knowledge of standard theatrical construction techniques and associated materials.
Experience designing and incorporating Electrics, Automation, Pneumatics, Sculpting, sheet metal, plastics, upholstery, and paint processes
Understanding of and facility with theatrical rigging and stage mechanics
Can maintain a positive attitude while working on high profile, high expectation, and time-sensitive projects.
Autodesk inventor or Fusion 360 experience in a professional setting
In-depth knowledge of standard theatrical construction techniques and associated materials.
Understanding of and facility with theatrical rigging and stage mechanics
Experience working with and utilizing a CNC router to speed up production time and increase accuracy
