Teaching Artist - New York Theatre Workshop

Since our founding in 1979 by Stephen Graham, New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) has fostered a community of adventurous audiences and visionary theatremakers, bringing them together to deepen our shared understanding of the world around us. We nurture pioneering new writers like Jeremy O. Harris and Celine Song and bring them into conversation with powerhouse playwrights like Ayad Akhtar and Amy Herzog. We empower inimitable auteurs like Rachel Chavkin and Lileana Blain-Cruz and lift up emerging directors like Awoye Timpo and Sammi Cannold. We continue to maintain decades-long commitments to artists like Caryl Churchill and Dael Orlandersmith, who have shaped our very understanding of what theatre can be.  



Our productions have reached hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, and the work we've nurtured has gone on to move millions more uptown and around the world. Seven of our productions have transferred to Broadway, and in 2019, our work was honored with 16 Tony Awards nominations— including 8 Tonys for Best Musical winner HADESTOWN—and Heidi Schreck was a Pulitzer finalist for WHAT THE CONSTITUTION MEANS TO ME. In 2020, SLAVE PLAY garnered the most Tony nominations for a play—the most in Broadway history! Our work has been recognized with a Pulitzer Prize and numerous Tony, Obie, and Drama Desk Awards, along with the Lilly Awards for our decades-long commitment to gender equality.  



But that's not what we're proudest of. We take the greatest satisfaction from the community we've built and the perspective‐shifting experiences we've delivered along the way. Even in the middle of a global pandemic, our community has continued to deepen existing connections and expand into new ones. From calls to check in on each other to grants for our artists to brand new education programming, our staff, Board, artists, and audiences have shared in more than 175 virtual events attended by nearly 100,000 since the pandemic began. We are also thrilled to have returned to East 4th Street and look forward to our 2022/23 season. We all think that theatre can bring people together, change the conversation, and have a profound impact. We feel fortunate to get to support it. About the Team 



Our four‐person Education team is responsible for the coordination and implementation of NYTW’s Education and Community Engagement Initiatives, which provide access to the vision and methods of the artist, professional training to the next generation of theatre administrators, and enable audiences of all ages to participate in a community of dynamic learning. Teaching Artists (TAs) will join a diverse, talented, and vibrant roster of artist educators facilitating workshops at NYTW’s school and community partners sites. Teaching Artists report directly to the Director of Education and Education Associate.



About the Position 



New York Theatre Workshop seeks enthusiastic, motivated, highly-skilled theatre artists and educators to join its roster of part-time seasonal Teaching Artists. NYTW Teaching Artists:  



- Develop and facilitate the original curriculum surrounding NYTW’s productions.

- Work with partner teachers and NYTW staff to plan theatre skill and/or theatre integration residencies. 

- Collaborate with teachers and NYTW staff to create a culturally-relevant curriculum that supports and enhances classroom learning. 

- Work with community partners and NYTW staff to develop residencies, workshops, and experiences that meet the needs and goals of the constituencies served. 

- Facilitate intergenerational workshops at NYTW and community partner sites. 

- Facilitate masterclasses for youth and adult participants. 

- Facilitate careers in the theatre workshops at NYTW and school and community partner sites. 

- Participate in planning meetings at NYTW and/or school and community partner sites. 



About You 



- You are a skilled theatre Teaching Artist who is committed to creating and maintaining an equitable and inclusive community. 

- You are familiar with NYTW’s artistic, educational, and community engagement mission.    

- You have experience in theatre, educational and/or applied theatre, or relevant experience in arts education. 

- You have experience in three or more of the following areas: acting/scene study, directing, playwriting, devising, dramaturgy, verbatim/interview theatre, Shakespeare, physical theatre/movement, choreography, stage combat/intimacy coordination, musical theatre, composition, technical theatre/design, stage management and/or others. 

- You possess excellent teaching/facilitation, written, and interpersonal communication skills. 

- You have a passion for creating community among a diverse population of learners. 

- You have experience working with high school-aged youth in educational settings and/or non-traditional settings. 

- You have experience working with diverse student populations and a range of high school grade and experience levels. 

- You are passionate about working with young artists. 

- You are a motivated collaborator able to engage with multiple diverse individuals to achieve program goals. 



Bonus 



- You are knowledgeable about the NYC public school system. 

- You have experience with intergenerational arts programming. 

- You have experience working with youth ensembles. 

- You have experience with aesthetic education and popular education methods. 

- You have experience facilitating career development workshops with special emphasis on behind-the-scenes careers. 



Application Process 

- To apply for NYTW’s Teaching Artist roster, you must submit the following items through our online application portal: 

- A cover letter, or a web link to a statement in audio or video format (no more than 5 minutes), explaining their approach to teaching. 

- A résumé or CV detailing both their artistic and teaching experience. 

- A one-page outline of a ten-session theatre residency for any high school grade (9-12) including learning goals, questions for students, and activities to address learning goals. You may also include lesson plans (optional). 



The NYTW Education Team will do an initial review of application materials and invite finalists to group audition day where candidates will be asked to facilitate a 12-minute sample mini-lesson with fellow applicants and Education staff as participants. Candidates will receive further details if invited to audition. 



This is a part-time seasonal position and Teaching Artists are contracted by residency or workshop. Pay is $50/hr for meeting and planning time and $75-$100/hr for teaching time depending on the program.

Please note that NYTW is in a hybrid work environment with Education Department staff in the office three days a week. Our approach will continue to be evaluated based on advice from local, state, and federal authorities and will take into account the personal situation of every employee. However, this position will require onsite, in-person activity at NYTW, in NYC schools, and/or at community sites, so the applicants should intend to reside in the greater NYC area.
