Stagehand l - $17.11 - $22.31 per hour
Under general supervision, is responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of all theater equipment during client rentals. Examples include hanging and focus of lighting equipment; setup and distribution of audio equipment; operation of the scenic rail; operation of the follow spots; loading and unloading of trucks or various rental or client equipment; performs related work as required.
Stagehand ll - $21.04 - $27.44 per hour
Under general supervision, is responsible for the leading of Stagehand l's in the performance of their duties and in the completion of more complicated tasks. Examples include rigging of chain motors; proper weight loading on the scenic rail; operation of the lighting and audio control boards; opening and lockup of the facility; orchestra pit conversions; pulling of proper and exact equipment for rental load ins; performs related work as required.
Stagehand III - $25.87 - $29.12 per hour
Under general supervision, is responsible for the leading of Stagehand l's & ll's in the performance of their duties and in the completion of more complicated tasks. Examples include safety assessments of any rigging equipment or goods; layout of rental equipment on the deck or on the scenic rail; programming of the audio and light control boards; maintenance of all theater equipment and the facilities; modification of house standards to meet client needs; power and control tie in to house equipment and power panels; direct and primary communication with clients during rentals; performs related work as required.
Typical Duties Performed
Stagehand l
Loading and unloading of equipment from vehicles, trailers, or other containers.
Use of various hand tools in the assembly of theater or client equipment or scenic pieces.
Operation of follow spots during performances.
Operation of the scenic rail during load ins, strikes, and performances.
Sweeping and mopping of the stage floor.
Hanging of the house plot or rental plot for various clients.
Focus of the light plot to suit the needs of the client.
Painting of the stage floor or other scenic pieces when necessary.
Running of power and data control cables to various areas around the stage to suit client's needs.
Assembly of pipe and drape to create quick change areas both onstage and backstage.
Assembly of stage risers in various configurations to suit client's needs.
Maintenance of the theater's equipment both ongoing and annually.
Adheres to City and department policies and procedures; performs related duties as required or assigned.
Stagehand ll
Carries out all the duties of the Stagehand l position.
Supervises Stagehand l's in the completion of their duties.
Identifies necessary equipment required to suit client needs.
Operation and use of chain motors, span sets, gak flex, wire rope, rope hand lines, other various tools and supplies to safely and effectively rig or fly various scenic elements.
Use of proper and safe techniques to efficiently load weight onto line sets.
Operation of the audio and lighting consoles in the absence of a full-time employee during rehearsals and some rentals.
Performs opening and closing procedures of the backstage areas of the building in anticipation of client arrival or end of the day.
Converts the pit between its two levels of operation.
Maintains the theater's equipment both ongoing and annually.
Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures; performs related duties as required or assigned.
Stagehand III
Carries out all the duties of the Stagehand l & Stagehand ll positions.
Directs and supervises Stagehand l's & ll's in the completion of their duties.
Planning and layout of all rigging equipment necessary for rigging or flying any scenic elements or other structures.
Layout of rental equipment or scenery on the stage floor or line sets to accomplish the client's needs.
Programming of audio or lighting boards during any rehearsals or performances in the absence of a full time employee.
Modification of any standard house equipment or practices to meet client's needs.
Safely tie in power, data, or audio signal into house systems or power panels.
Serves as a primary point of contact between the theater and clients.
Services and maintains all of the theater's equipment on a daily basis.
Adheres to City department and policies and procedures; performs related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Must possess excellent customer services skills and the ability to work as a team.
Stagehand l
Knowledge of: Use of basic hand tools (e.g. adjustable wrench, screwdrivers, impact drivers). Basic operating procedures of the fly rail and loading bridge. Basics of electrical loads and theatrical lamp wattage. Stage terminology and directions. Basic painting techniques. Cleaning practices including sweeping and mopping of the stage floor. Common theater knots and rope use. Operation of a follow spot.
Ability to: Lift 50 lbs. unaided and in repetition. Assemble basic theatrical scenic elements. Work sometimes in extreme environments (e.g. outside during summer, tight or confined spaces, heights). Work with other Stagehands as a team in the completion of various tasks. Maintain a safe working environment. Learn quickly and adapt to changing situations.
Stagehand ll
Knowledge of: All Stagehand l requirements. Power tools (e.g. Hammer Drill, Porta Ban, Solder Gun). Applying body microphones to performers. Advanced fly rail techniques and operation. Basic operating functionality of light and audio control boards. Intermediate rigging techniques and familiarity with safety protocols. Basic scenic construction techniques for the building and repair of renter and in-house equipment. Advanced knowledge of video systems and projections. Use of mechanized man lift, forklift and scissor lift.
Ability to: Perform all Stagehand l requirements. Lead a crew of stagehands in the completion of tasks. Effectively communicate and delegate duties to a crew. Trouble shooting of audio signal cables and microphones. Trouble shooting of lighting equipment and power and data cables. Operation of chain motors. Prioritize notes, repairs, and changes during tech weeks and performances under constrained time schedules.
Stagehand lll
Knowledge of: All Stagehand l & ll requirements. Advanced knowledge of the programming and operation of the audio and lighting control consoles. Advanced knowledge of rigging techniques and familiarity with safety protocols, thereof. Design and layout of rigging to safely and effectively fly scenery and other equipment (e.g. Bridles, Load limits, Securing truss). Lighting design and the use of color and texture to achieve the desired look for renters and performances. Audio design and microphone and monitor layout for theatrical performances and concerts. Advanced repair knowledge of theatrical equipment. Advanced knowledge of video systems and projections.
Ability to: Perform all Stagehand l & ll requirements. Lead a crew of stagehands in the completion of complex tasks. Effectively plan ahead and carry out multiple tasks at once. Quickly and efficiently pack a truck or vehicle. Communicate with clients and theater staff to carry out client needs. Fill out house specific paperwork related to an event (e.g. Rental reports, Accident reports, Maintenance reports). Maintain a professional work environment and be an example to other crew members. Prioritize notes, repairs, and changes during tech weeks and performances under constrained time schedules.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Stagehand l
Two years of professional experience in a theatrical or entertainment setting is required. Graduation from high school or the equivalent is required.
Stagehand ll
Four years of professional experience in a theatrical or entertainment setting is required. Graduation from high school or the equivalent is required.
Stagehand lll
Six years of professional experience in a theatrical or entertainment setting is required. Graduation from high school or the equivalent is required.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
All Stagehand Positions - Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License is required.
Supplemental Information
Appointments are normally made at the first step of the salary range. Consideration and approval for a salary higher than the first step is done on a case by case basis.
